Campus Program
About Campus Program
The Alliance’s Campus Programs address sexual violence on college campuses by partnering with students and faculty to create safer, more inclusive environments. This means that we provide comprehensive education through workshops and trainings, foster student engagement and leadership, and create safety and inclusion through policy support and resource development. We deliver this work across two key programs:
General Campus Program: this program is guided by New York State’s ‘Enough is Enough’ law (Education Law 129-B) and provides training, technical assistance, and awareness events tailored to individual campus needs. Our student-centered approach empowers students, faculty, and administrators to help create safer, more supportive communities. Through education and collaboration, we equip campus communities with the tools to take action and work toward ending sexual violence. Students and faculty of any college campus in New York City can request training and support from our General Campus Program.
Collegiate Changemakers Fellowship Program: this program empowers the next generation of sexual violence prevention and response leaders by supporting students to take action, build community, and create lasting change. Our fellows are paired with a mentor aligned with their interests and skills so that they gain personalized guidance and hands-on experience. They also connect with peers across the city, build networks, and stay informed about the latest trends and issues in the field. The Changemakers apply the skills gained during the program by creating their own events for our annual Campus SAAM Week, a student-led digital initiative focused on campus sexual violence prevention and response. Students and recent alumni of any college campus in New York City can apply to join the Changemakers Program.
How We Work With Campuses
Comprehensive Education and Training:
We offer customized training for students, faculty, and staff. This includes:
- Tailored Workshops, which are designed for different campus groups, from student leaders to administrators. These sessions include relevant and actionable education.
- Interactive Learning Methods, including role-playing exercises, case studies, and discussion-based training to deepen understanding and retention.
- Ongoing Education that builds on foundational knowledge across a series of workshops, rather than one-time programming.
- Assessment and Adaptation through regular evaluations that measure effectiveness and provide opportunities to adjust content based on campus needs and feedback.
Student Engagement and Leadership:
We empower students as leaders in gender-based violence prevention by supporting their advocacy and leadership development. Our services include:
- Leadership Development through fellowship and internship opportunities where students can play an active role in campus sexual violence prevention.
- Student-Led Initiative Support like mentorship and resources for student organizations focused on prevention and survivor advocacy.
- Cross-Campus Collaboration through partnerships between student groups, administrators, and outside advocacy groups to ensure an intersectional approach to prevention.
Campus Safety and Inclusion:
We assist campuses in creating safer, more inclusive environments through policy support, resource development, and community collaboration. This includes:
- Policy and Reporting Guidance that helps institutions conduct Campus Climate Surveys, strengthen sexual misconduct policies, create clear reporting structures, and ensure survivor-centered processes.
- Enhancing Safety Measures through consultation on campus safety improvements, like physical and digital safety mapping.
- Building Community Partnerships: we connect campuses with local rape crisis centers, advocacy organizations, and legal aid services to provide comprehensive support.
Our Impact
Last year, we trained 1,738 students, faculty, and staff, helping them foster a culture of prevention, support, and accountability on their campuses so that students can thrive in a safe and equitable learning environment. We reached 2,500 additional campus community members through events that we organized alongside our trainings.
Here’s what students and staff have to say about the Campus Program:
“For me, being in the program has strengthened my passion for advocacy. As an introverted/quiet person, speaking out loud does not come naturally to me. But Sam and all of the Alliance mentors, volunteers, and employees remind students that our voices are what matter most. We are in some of the best positions to shine light on the social issues happening across the world, and it takes involvement in programs like the Changemakers to remind you. Once you start advocating, you don’t want to stop, and I’m glad I started.”
– 2023-24 Changemaker Fellow
“The presentation was great and well explained. I came for the pizza but definitely stayed for the information. This is something that I feel like needs to be talked about a lot more”
– Baruch Student re: Consent Needs a New Metaphor: Pizza Program 2024
“The presenter was highly informative, calm, nonjudgemental, affirming of participants’ viewpoints and comments, well organized, and overall terrific. I attend very few hour-long presentations that I think were worth the full hour, and this one really was. Thank you for the training, and thank you for the important work that you do.”
