Course Description
The objectives of this course address the development of skillful assessment techniques, thorough understanding of the dynamics of rape and intimate partner violence, and the mechanics of injury which provide a solid foundation for working with survivors. Although the curriculum prioritizes the importance of the victim’s treatment and recovery, it also recognizes the importance of evidence collection, objective documentation, and the need to provide testimony based on professional experience. This course combines the knowledge and expertise of a nationally and internationally recognized faculty with a variety of educational methods to give participants the maximum opportunity for professional growth in this advanced practice role. In addition, this course will combine classroom sessions with an online independent study. The course has been certified by New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH). Upon completion of all course requirements, course participants will be able to use the Certificate of Completion for certification purposes as SAFENY with NYS DOH.
Who Should Take this Course
The course prepares licensed physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners and nurse mid-wives to provide comprehensive evaluation, treatment, and evidence collection for adult / adolescent survivors of sexual violence.
About SAFETI
SAFETI is a NYS Department of Health and IAFN-certified training program for licensed medical professionals in New York City who wish to become Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFEs).
Certified in August 2004, SAFETI trains upwards of 100 healthcare professionals each year. These SAFE training courses are open to NYS-licensed physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and nurse midwives. These training courses prepare medical professionals to provide high quality trauma-informed, comprehensive and compassionate care to survivors of sexual assault.
