Sexual Assault Health and Forensic Services Training Institute (SAFETI)

Program Highlights:
  • The Alliance’s Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) training program was the first to be certified in the state.
  • Largest certified training program for licensed Emergency Department and medical professionals in New York State.
  • Remains the ONLY program in the NYC area that exists specifically to provide “comprehensive programmatic support and trainings for the forensic sexual assault treatment community.”
  • Only program open to all licensed medical professionals.
  • Only hybrid course in New York City: the 5 day program includes 3 days of in-class learning and 2 days of online work.

The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault in partnership with area hospitals, the Medical Society of the State of New York and The New York Academy of Medicine currently develops, offers, and evaluates a series of Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner training programs available to local medical professionals. After the passage of the Sexual Assault Reform Act (SARA), the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) began to develop standards for “approving SAFE hospital programs, approving programs that train individual SAFE examiners, and certifying individual SAFE examiners.” As a DOH-approved training program, SAFETI  ensures that victims of sexual assault are provided with” competent, compassionate and prompt care, while providing the most advanced technology associated with DNA and other sexual assault forensic evidence collection and preservation.” Beginning with the 40-hour Basic Safe Course, the Alliance has since expanded the offerings to include an advanced course, a pediatric course, a mock trial course, and a preceptorship course.

SAFETI consists of two groups. The Curriculum Committee oversees credit requirements, instruction improvement, curriculum standards, and evaluation of new programs and other subjects related to SAFE training policy and curriculum. The Management Office plans, develops, and administers programs and activities as agreed upon with the Curriculum Committee and represents SAFETI's interests at city, state, and national levels.
