PTSD and Physical Health
Exposure to traumatic events such as military combat, physical and sexual abuse, and natural disaster, can be related to poor physical health. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is also related to health problems. This fact sheet provides information on the relationships between trauma, PTSD, and physical health; specific health problems associated with PTSD; health-risk behaviors and PTSD; mechanisms that help explain how PTSD and physical health could be related; and a clinical agenda to address PTSD and health.

Community ProgramsThe Alliance's Community Programs encompass the work we do to develop sustainable community-based interventions to prevent and respond to sexual violence. This includes building the capacity of individuals, organizations and institutions to analyze the impact of sexual violence and providing them with the skills to develop interventions that best fit the needs of their community. Principles of participation, theories of social norms change and community mobilization approaches are key to our community-based programming. Action Research for Immigrant Social Empowerment (ARISE)Action Research for Immigrant Social Empowerment (ARISE) consists of several community based organizations (CBOs) focused on immigrant services in New York City, a research-led advocacy organization and a research, policy and advocacy organization. ARISE seeks to engage immigrant women in effective ways to reduce sexual and domestic violence and promote awareness through education, research, and advocacy in order to effect policy changes at the local and national level. Read more »Project ENVISIONTo date, no organization in New York City has dedicated resources to executing strategic steps to prevent sexual violence. Many agencies in the city have dedicated time and money to provide much-needed services to survivors of sexual violence. However, very little attention has been paid to stopping the tens of thousands of sexual assaults that occur in NYC each year—before they happen. The NYC Alliance recognizes that in order to reduce the incidence of sexual violence, resources must be devoted to addressing the root causes of sexual violence. This is referred to as primary prevention—primary because it addresses a problem before it occurs. Read more » SAY SO!On Sunday May 18th the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault held its fifth annual SAY SO! event in Union Square from 12-10pm. This year's theme was: A Celebration of Healing and Recovery. For the past four years, survivors of sexual assault, their supporters, and volunteers from the local rape crisis community have gathered to generate awareness and give sexual violence a face and a voice. Your attendance at SAYSO! helped further this tradition of New Yorkers uniting to end the silence around sexual assault. Read more » The Youth Action CouncilThe Youth Action Council (YAC) is a leadership model developed by the Alliance to cultivate youth as leaders in preventing sexual and dating violence among their peers. Our youth leadership model has three main elements designed to encourage participation and skill development, involving young people in decision-making and leadership. Read more » The Pause Button CampaignThe Pause Button Campaign is a youth sexual assault prevention poster and toolkit for an audience of 11-13 year-old boys. Its goal is to get boys thinking about the issue of sexual assault and the attitudes that reinforce a culture that accepts sexual assault. The poster and toolkit aim to reinforce boys' positive masculinity, respect boys' own moral compasses, and show boys how to not cross the line and commit a sexual assault. Read more » |
