The Alliance has compiled a number of resources available for survivors, their friends and families, and professionals assisting survivors in New York City.

Policy Priority: Access to Care

The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault is strongly committed to identifying best care practices for survivors of sexual violence, and advocating to change those city policies that hinder the ability of victims to access care. Since 2001 the Alliance has provided research on a variety of best care/access to care issues, including: police interaction, the impact of sexual assault examiners on criminal justice outcomes, and intervention preferences of NYC rape crisis counselors.

In 2007 the Alliance conducted a study examining sexual assault services in emergency departments in New York City. As a result of this report, the Alliance and other stakeholders campaigned to change ambulance protocols so that victims could be transported to the nearest SAFE center, rather than simply the closest hospital. While the Alliance has had success with these initiatives, research in access to care continues and new avenues for intervention are currently being considered.

  • Advocate for/or provide public information campaigns
  • Ensure that a system of Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner care exists in NYC
  • Continue to monitor the EMS destination designation that bring rape victims by ambulance to specialized centers.
