Introducing The NYC Sexual Assault Health And Forensic Services Training Institute (SAFETI)

The Alliance has been at the forefront of the development of health policy related to sexual violence treatment through our work on the "Protocol for the Acute Care of the Adult Patient Reporting Sexual Assault," as well as the standards for Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner programs, training programs and examiners with the NYS Department of Health. We continued this leadership when we became the first Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Training Program certified by the state and the development of SAFETI  continues this trend. SAFETI provides advanced certification, continuing education and professional development opportunities for medical providers and first responders. As the number of certified Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFEs) in NYC is growing rapidly, we are responding to the need for additional continuing medical education by offering advanced course offerings.

Partnering With The New York Academy Of Medicine

The Alliance is proud to announce a partnership with New York Academy of Medicine to jointly sponsor all SAFETI educational activities. These activities will be planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). The New York Academy of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Alliance Receives Two Grants

In recognition of the efforts to address sexual assault as a public health issue, the Alliance is proud to announce that we are the recipient of two grants to advance work in the field of Health and Forensic Services. Thank you to the NYS Crime Victims Board and the NYS Health Foundation for their generosity and their commitment to providing quality health care for all New Yorkers who are victims of sexual assault.

Sexual Assault Victim Services: Media/Multi-Media Awareness Campaign Grant was awarded by the New York State Crime Victims Board. This grant is designed to address the gap in information available to the public on specialized services for sexual assault victims.

Special Opportunities Initiative-Capacity Building Grant was awarded by the New York State Health Foundation in order to strengthen the capacity of NYC health care institutions that provide quality patient-centered sexual assault acute health care by providing training and professional development for all service providers.

Alliance Presents On SAFE Programs At Cook County Conference

In the fall, the Alliance was honored to participate in "Improving the Medical Response to Rape Victims in Cook County: A 2008 Summit" in Chicago. Event host, the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault, brought representatives of three leading SAFE programs in the country (NYC; Akron, Ohio and Ft. Wayne, Indiana) to share their expertise. About 60 professionals who work with rape victims, including  victims' advocates, healthcare providers, law enforcement officers and prosecutors attended. The  Alliance was pleased to share our knowledge, experience and expertise in the development and coordination of SAFE programs citywide. Many thanks to the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault for their hospitality and organization of a great event.

Community Researchers are now reaching out to Project ENVISION coalition members and conducting focus groups in each of the three chosen communities: Manhattan's Lower East Side, Highbridge/Morrisania/Concourse in the South Bronx and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Project ENVISION is also preparing for an upcoming Rape Crisis Training  Institute this Spring which will focus on training Community Activists on community organizing and other important community mobilization skills.

New: The Alliance Fundraising Committee

The Alliance is happy to report an expansion in our fundraising efforts to include a Fundraising Committee comprised of volunteers interested in making a difference in the fight against sexual violence.

The committee is chaired by Niketa Sheth, Senior Strategic Planner for NYU Medical Center. She also works with the Women's Rights Division at Human Rights Watch NGO and received her MPA from NYU in Health Policy and International Non-Profit Management. "The community certainly gains from the Alliance's efforts in research, advocacy, education and policy," Ms. Sheth says. "It was important for me to join the fundraising committee to ensure the sustainability of resources the Alliance needs to  continue its successful work."

The Alliance's Fundraising Committee is planning two Spring events, so stay tuned for details. If you would like to become involved, please contact Elyssa Toomey, Development Director, at  etoomey@nycagainstrape.org.

Through Our Own Eyes: Young People Envisioning A City Without Sexual Violence - Asking For Donated Digital Cameras

As part of an innovative research project with youth leaders in New York City, the Alliance is asking for 30 donated cameras, or the funds to purchase these cameras. Young people will be taught how to convey their ideas about sexual and dating violence through photography and will learn how to develop corresponding narratives. The photographs will be displayed in a public exhibit at the conclusion of the project. To donate please contact Elyssa Toomey, Development Director, at  donations@nycagainstrape.org.
