Dear Friends, Partners, and Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that the staff and the Board of Directors announce the appointment of Tamika D. Payne as the new Executive Director of the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault.

Tamika joins the Alliance and brings a wealth of experience with more than 20 years in gender-based violence (GBV), gender equality, as well as diversity, equity, and social inclusion (DEI), domestically and internationally.

Early in her career, Tamika was an advocate and organizer. She counseled survivors of sexual violence, managed a sexual assault counseling program, and worked as a part of the team to develop the first Sexual Assault Response team in Michigan’s capital. She went on to become the Executive Director of the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault. There, she increased the public policy success of the Coalition by expanding efforts to tackle state and national legislation, creating bipartisan support for legislation on human rights and sexual assault. One major victory extended the statute of limitations on child sexual assault.

Tamika transitioned to the international stage, linking domestic efforts to end sexual violence with global efforts. She served as a GBV technical advisor with the International Rescue Committee covering West Africa and South Sudan. Then Tamika served as the GBV Area of Responsibility Global Coordinator with the United Nations. As the Global Coordinator, she managed global and field level GBV prevention, risk mitigation, and response programming aimed at creating an inclusive, intersectional approach to GBV in humanitarian settings.

Most recently, Tamika runs her own consulting firm founded to address the lack of diversity and inclusion in sexual violence and gender equality programming both in nonprofits and businesses. Through an intersectional lens, she supports efforts to address gender equity, violence prevention and response, and protection, by working with each client to identify and overcome their specific programmatic and organizational challenges. Her clients included governments, international and national organizations and businesses, the United Nations, community-based groups, and individuals. Tamika has served on state and federal boards on sexual violence and presented at numerous global and national conferences. Currently, Tamika serves as Vice President of New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault’s Board of Directors, an organization the Alliance works closely with.

As Executive Director, Tamika will oversee the daily operations and financial management of the Alliance
to enhance our status as a leading voice for sexual assault survivors and a leading organization working to end sexual violence in New York City. She will work with the staff, Board, and you to develop and implement the strategic vision for the Alliance that will build upon our current successes. In addition, she will work to increase funding for our critical programs, which will allow greater operational flexibility.

As we take this step to welcome our new Executive Director, we would like to express our deep gratitude to Sara Zaidi for serving as Interim Executive Director over these past several months and to the entire staff for maintaining the Alliance’s mission to its highest standard, all during a pandemic and continued social unrest. We are extremely grateful for their hard work and commitment to the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault.

Rashmi Gill, Chair of the Board, “We are excited to move forward as an organization under Tamika’s leadership and are very pleased to take this opportunity to celebrate her appointment and introduce her to you, our friends, partners, and colleagues. Tamika’s life’s work has demonstrated her expertise, knowledge, and passion to work alongside key strategic stakeholders to eradicate gender-based violence.”

With her vast and diverse experience as a leader in the field of anti-violence, both domestically and internationally, Tamika brings a strong vision to the Alliance built on a foundation of intersectionality. We’re thrilled that she has joined our organization and welcome Tamika not only to the Alliance but to the broader anti-sexual violence community here in New York City. Please join us in welcoming Tamika as the new Executive Director of the Alliance!

Sincerely,

The Alliance Board and Staff
